Goethe called this story the greatest novel of his day. Charles Dickens found the novel fascinating. The novel was probably written in 1762, first published in 1766. The reader will feel an instant sympathy with all of the characters. The Vicar himself, the unruly Sophia, the dependable Mr. Burchell, the reprehensible Squire Thornhill, the simple Moses, all become parts of our lives as we read of them. The novel is full of gentle satire, which stir the emotions. But the book is a biography of a man of a true gentleness and pure feeling, of as fine a humanity, as ever lived, according to the publisher. A classic story.
