Original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. 5" x 7 1/4." 275 pages, complete. Former owner's inscription in black ink on a front flyleaf: "To Cynthia, from mother, March 10th 1869." Printer's information on verso of half-title: "University Press: Welch, Bigelow, & Co., Cambridge." Pages and covers are clean and intact overall. There appears to have been some glue repair on the front endpaper along the hinge. Back hinge is slightly worn. Lucy Larcom (1824-1893) was an American teacher, author, and poet. She was one of the first teachers at the Wheat Female Seminary (now Wheaton College) and was a respected writer in her time. This book contains many poems by Larcom. The poems range in subject; many include language evoking scenic landscapes; others are more serious in tone and are about the Civil War. One of her more famous poems, "A Loyal Woman's No," is included in this book and was especially popular during the war. The poems are organized in the following categories: "Seaside and Hillside," "Child and Woman," "From Without," "War-Memories," "Miscellaneous," and "Devotional."
