VIRGIL. P. Virgilii Maronis Opera. Vol. I(- V). Ex antiquis monimentis illustrata cura, studio & sumtibus Henrici Justice. Bruxellis: Prostant venales apud J.L. de Boubers, [1800]. Five volumes. 21.5 x 14 cm. This is a reprint of the original edition of 1757-1765, with de Boubers' imprint added at foot of t.p.'s. The last volume is an index by Christoph Saxe; it also contains William Justice's dedication of the work to Catharine II (the Great) of Russia. Entirely engraved throughout - including the text, with title vignettes, illustrations, head- and tail- pieces and historiated initials by G.M. Pitteri after Fidance and C.F. de La Traverse. Folded map in Volume 2 engraved by Herman Condet. Printed on one side of the leaf only. This is a very clean copy, with some neglible thumbing and offsetting to a few leaves. The once elegant bindings (old calf, diced and gilt-stamped, with matching marbled endpapers and edges) are now sadly worn, with crudely mended hinges. The top board of Volume 2 is detached. A beautifully printed edition that needs rebinding; it is offered with all faults. Click here for full details of this book, to ask a question or to buy it on-line.
