WIENER, Norbert. CYBERNETICS, or control and communication in the animal and the machine. The (Massachusetts Institute of) Technology Press. New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., (1948). First American edition, published the same year as the first edition by Hermann & Cie. of Paris. (The text of this edition was offset from sheets of the Hermann edition, but with the addition of a new title and an additional half-title replacing the original title leaf.) Octavo. [1]f.,194 pp. Publisher's red cloth binding, with title printed in black and white on spine and upper board. A fresh looking copy, it has a slight pressure indentation at the bottom edge of the upper board and shows faint evidence of damp exposure on the fore-edge of the bookblock, though not on the text pages. There is acid transfer on the front endpapers, where a newspaper article about Wiener is stored, otherwise it is quite clean and a near-fine copy overall. This copy is signed by Wiener on the ffep. Above Wiener's signature is the book's first owner (Frederick Ireland) with the date (Nov 10, 1948) stamped above it. Laid-in are an announcement for a lecture, "Cybernetics: Feedback and Human Behavior," to be given by Wiener at UCLA on 27 May 1949, and a profile of Wiener and his work, "Chemical Brains for Robots Seen," clipped from the Los Angeles Times, 28 May 1949. Wiener's work is the founding text of cybernetics, the science of control and communication theory in animals and machines. The concepts of cybernetics have had wide application in the fields of biology, physiology, psychology, and linguistics, and, by providing methods for analyzing complex social organizations in terms of the flow and processing of information , in various branches of social science such as economics and political theory. Cybernetics also has great and obvious relevance to the development of artificial intelligence, information feedback systems, automation, control mechanisms in engineering, etc. (Garrison & Morton 4991.1)., Fine Click here for full details of this book, to ask a question or to buy it on-line.
