Doyle (A. Conan) : GREAT BOER WAR

558 pages, 8vo (210 x 140 mm), original blue cloth, spine a little faded, corners rubbed, some pencil annotations in the text, letter from the author loosely mounted on the front free endpaper and an ownership inscription on the paste-down endpaper, a very good copy

The letter on note paper headed Undershaw, Hindhead, Haslemere, is dated April, 1901, and reads, 'Madam, I have to thank you for your kind note and correction which shall be attended to - I had not previously had it pointed out. Yours faithfully, A. Conan Doyle.' The ownership inscription is of Katherine J. Munro, 15th March, 1901. Doyle lived at Undershaw, a spacious country house near Hindhead, from 1897 to September 1907 when he remarried after the death of his first wife and moved to Crowborough. Conan Doyle wrote the first edition of The Great Boer War covering the first phase of the war to the occupation of Pretoria whilst serving as the senior civil physician with the Langman field Hospital in Bloemfontein and it was published in October 1900. As the guerilla war progressed eighteen further impressions were issued. By 1900 he was as the height of his fame as a writer and this aided the success of his Boer War history.
