Written by Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935), an American author and poet who is perhaps best-known for her detective novels and for pioneering the genre of detective fiction in the United States. Her works of detective fiction have been described as having intricate, well-reasoned plots with legal accuracy; such was the reputation of her books that a debate was supposedly begun in the Pennsylvania State Senate over whether her detective novel, The Leavenworth Case, could have been written by a woman.
