Original publisher's hand-colored map showing Asia and parts of Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. A beautiful map with blue, green, yellow, orange, and pink outlines delineating the political boundaries. No date, circa 1843-1860. Map with margins measures 17 1/4" x 12 3/4"; actual map area measures 15" x 10." The map is very clean and intact with minimal age wear. Former ownership inscriptions are written in the margins (a couple notes are written within the map area), but all of the handwriting is in pencil. A fine copy. The following are some of the countries and regions that are shown on the map: China, Japan, Korea, India, Borneo, the Philippines, Siam (known today as Thailand), Formosa (modern-day Taiwan), Cambodia, Laos, Birmah/Burma (modern-day Myanmar), Cochinchina and Tonquin (modern-day Vietnam), New Guinea, Russia, Siberia, Persia (modern-day Iran), Arabia, Turkey, Afghanistan, Beloochistan, Turkomania (modern-day Turkmenistan), and Tartary. Major cities, rivers, and other geographical features are included. The Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Indian Ocean are also labeled. "Engraved by Sidney Hall." is printed in lower-right corner. "XXXV" is printed in the upper-right corner. The title and scale of distance in miles are printed in the upper-left corner. Lines of latitude and longitude also included. This map was originally published in Black's General Atlas. Adam Black (1784-1874) was a Scottish publisher and politician. He founded the A & C Black publishing company in 1807 which still operates to this day. His nephew, Charles Black, joined his company a few years later. Sidney Hall (1788-1831) was an English map publisher and engraver. He made a name for himself as a reputable engraver in the mapmaking industry. Upon Hall's passing in 1931, his wife, Selina Price Hall (1782-1853), who was a Welsh scientist and fellow map engraver, took over his business and signed her maps under the name, "S. Hall.". Map. A beautiful map featuring pink, green, blue, orange, and yellow coloring along the border of the countries. Major cities are shown along with natural geographic features such as rivers, bays, oceans, and seas. Map with margins measures 10 1/2" x 8 1/4"; actual map area measures 9 1/2" X 7 5/8." Map is very clean and intact except for a few very small chips on the top and bottom edge and slight off-setting. Title and scale of distance in English Miles printed in upper-left corner. Lines of latitude and longitude also included. Underneath the map is the following information: "London; Published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, Paternoster Row, 1822."
