Original publisher's hand-colored engraved map of France that shows its many constituent provinces and departments. A beautiful map featuring pink, green, blue, orange, and yellow coloring along the borders of the French provinces and departments. Major cities are shown along with natural geographic features such as rivers, the Bay of Biscay, the English Channel, and the Mediterranean Sea. Map with margins measures 10 1/2" x 8 1/4"; actual map area measures 9 1/2" x 7 1/4." There is slight off-setting and a complete split along the vertical center fold line, but map is otherwise very clean and intact. A couple former ownership inscriptions in black ink are in the margins of the upper-left and upper-right corners and list the total number of provinces and departments in France: "32 Provinces. 86 Departments." Title and scale of distance in English Miles printed in lower-left corner. "VI" printed in upper-right corner. Lines of latitude and longitude also included. Underneath the map is the following information: "London; Published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, Paternoster Row, 1822." and "Engraved by Sidy. Hall, Bury Strt. Bloomsby." Sidney Hall (1788-1831) was an English map publisher and engraver. He made a name for himself as a reputable engraver in the mapmaking industry. Upon Hall's passing in 1931, his wife, Selina Price Hall (1782-1853), who was a Welsh scientist and fellow map engraver, took over his business and signed her maps under the name, "S. Hall.". Map.
