"First American Edition." Brown full leather binding with gilt lettering on red leather spine label. Decorative gilt florets along the outer edges. 6" x 9." 580 pages, complete. Pages and covers very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Some rubbing and a few small marks to front and back. Slight creasing along front and back outer joints from regular use. In remarkable shape, especially given the age of the book. A Very Good copy. Former owner's signature in pencil: "J. [?] B. How, 1832." Former owner's bookplate tipped in on front pastedown: "Collection of Louis Kimball Hill." Another bookplate is tipped in on front pastedown but the left half is missing; what appears to be part of a word or name, "Clokie," is visible on the remainder of this bookplate as well as the date of 1925. "Fry and Kammerer, Printers" on title page. Dugald Stewart (1753-1828) was a Scottish philosopher and mathematician who figured greatly during the Scottish Enlightenment.
