Paul Theroux, internationally acclaimed for his distinguished novels and travel books, here evokes in a short, poetic story the meaning of one particular Christmas for one particular family. The story is set in a snowy December on America's Eastern coast, but it could perhaps be anywhere, for the feeling it creates is universal and timeless, just as the appeal of the book is
ageless. The Christmas card of the title is
left to guide a snowbound family by a mysterious old man - an old man who reappears at the end of the story to shed his own kind light and to illuminate the meaning of Christmas for Marcel and his family.
Paul Theroux brings the house, the snowy wilderness, the family and the old man into
sharp focus with his finely-wrought story-telling and his unique ability to sustain an atmosphere of wonder.John Lawrence is the ideal illustrator for A Christmas Card; text and pictures combine to make this book the perfect gift for the child in all of us.
