William Winter (1836-1917) was a leading American newspaper drama critic. In this letter, Winter writes to an unknown correspondent. The recipient is an acquaintance who Winter has known since his "school boy" days in Boston. Winter writes his acquaintance that he is sorry to have missed him while the acquaintance was in New York for a speaking engagement. Winter mentions George Arnold (1834-1865), a poet known to Winter and a relative of the recipient of the letter.
