Bloch was seen as a "Hercules" against Antisemitism; his history included a stint as torchbearer in the fight against Blood Libel accusations: "A fanatical ultramodernist priest from the Rheinland, Rohling published in1871 his DER TALMUDJUDE...a collection of deliberately corrupted quotations, imaginary statements, and forgeries against the Talmud....Rohling's challenger was Joseph Samuel Bloch who, after repeated sorties against him, published a series of articles in July 1883...in which he branded Rohling a liar and a perjurer.
