The title translates loosely into English as, “The Sanctuary: A Monthly Periodical on Jewish Culture and Politics. ” all 3 issues from the first year of publication of the influential Jewish-German periodical "Die Freistatt". Founded by Fritz Mordechai Kaufmann (1888-1921) , it was the only German-Jewish periodical to represent a 'pan-Judaic' approach, distinguishing it both from liberal and Zionist Judaism in Germany at that time. Was a forum for political, religious and sociological discussions about Judaism. Featured prominent writers such as Elsa Lasker Schüler, Chaim Nachman Bialik, Ber Borochov, and numerous others. Substantial Water damage throughout. Back Board is missing and front board is worn. Wrappers have bled onto pages and many pages have a damaged red discoloration. Some edgewear.
