First edition. Period boards. 8vo. 151 pages, 25 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to “Critical Evidence Against Wellhausen. ” Born in Hungary in 1843, Hoffmann was first a teacher and then rector of the Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin, succeeding Israel Hildesheimer, the Seminary's founder, in 1899. He wrote more than half a dozen books, and numerous essays and articles, some of which covered the Seminary. Among Hoffman’s intellectual opponents was Julius Wellhausen, who first presented the possibility that the bible was written by numerous narrators. Hoffmann criticized Wellhausen on the grounds that his theory rested entirely on textual analysis while ignoring other disciplines such as archaeology. This book was published for this purpose.
