Born in Rumania, he moved to Britain in 1882 and there became a spokesman for Jewish traditionalism. In 1901 he moved to New York and became the president of the Seminary. During his tenure the Seminary became one of the most important centers of Jewish learning and Jewish and intellectual revival. He regarded Zionism as a bulwark against assimilation and in 1913 attended the 11th Zionist Congress in Vienna.
