Signature on card by William T. Adams (Oliver Optic) in black ink. Card adhered to paper with Royal Irish Linen, Marcus Ward & Co. watermark. Datelined November 8, 1879 in Boston. Card measures 5" x 3"; paper measures 7 3/4" x 10 3/8." Card reads: "Very truly yours, William T. Adams, "Oliver Optic," Boston, Nov. 8, 1879." Card, paper, and signature are very clean and intact. William Taylor Adams (1822-1897) was an American academic, author, and politician. He began his career in grade school teaching. His background as a teacher helped lead to the success of his novels he wrote later. His books were mostly aimed at boys, but he wrote books for girls as well. Among Adams's most popular books were those from the Boat Club and Blue and Gray series. He never wrote under his real name, using the pen name, "Oliver Optic," the most. Adams's other pen names are "Irving Brown," "Clingham Hunter, M.D.," and "Old Stager." In 1869-1870, Adams also served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.. Manuscript.
