ANON but maybe Jonathan GASH! : Streetwalker

The Bodley Head. London. 1959

The Bodley Head. London. 1959. DW. From the front flap you would suppose this book was written by a young woman, who for ten months was a prostitute in the West End of London. Many believe this to have been written as a work of fiction by Jonathan Gash [Jonathan Grant] If this is true, as Harrington's believe, it is his first work and predates the first Lovejoy novel by 18 years. Gash did work as a GP and doctor in London so... The book in addition to the normal pink plain wrapper which is messily price-clipped has a very well done handmade cover-story wrapper - wittily titled "Komm-Mit No Nuisance." The original owner did not want someone to know what they were actually reading! pages are slightly browned and wrapper is slightly worn to extremities otherwise a clean and sound copy. I have priced this to reflect the middle ground between the average price for those who don't think it was a work by Gash (he has denied authorship) and those that do but also take into account the splendid extra wrapper. While trying to research this I came across the history of Dean Koontz's early works before he became a best selling horror writer. Evidently he wrote about 30 pornographic and gothic romance books, some with his wife Gerda, in order to make a living - the most famous and the only pornographic one he publically admitted to writing - is "Hung" by Leonard Chris. This now sells for up to $1,000.00. Even after 35 years as a bookseller I still get so much joy from learning things like this.
