Bates, Blanche : Autograph Letters Signed - Blanche Bates

Two letters, Los Angeles (2 pages) and Philadelphia (8 pages), 1905, 4 x 7". Ms. Bates (1873-1941) was an American operatic and stage actress, her roles ranging from the serious to popular. She worked in productions by Augustin Daly, David Belasco and others. These letters are to Mrs. Fielding Stilson, daughter of American drama critic William Winter (1836-1917). In the first letter, on stationery of the Van Nuys Hotel, she cancels an evening engagement, writing, "I'm a wreck - head like the devil - and feeling rotten". In the longer letter from Philadelphia (stamped envelope included), she writes that her play "Darling" has closed and that only Belasco knows what her next role will be. She describes a foot surgery she has recently undergone and is looking forward to moving to a new house.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
