A Very Good copy. "Reprinted from The Hispanic American Historical Review, Vol. II, No. 2, May, 1919." A reprinted article about the revolutions in Alta California and Lower California under the regime of Agustin de Iturbide (1783-1824) during the Mexican War of Independence. Also known by his regnal name, Agustin I, Iturbide was the first emperor of Mexico from 1822 until his abdication in 1823. This article contains reprinted Spanish documents (with original Spanish text and English translations) related to the efforts and outcomes of the securing the allegiance of Alta California and Lower California to the Mexican Empire. After Iturbide had declared Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, plans were made to secure the allegiance of both Californias. Antonio Andrade had made a report expressing his concerns that Alta California and Lower California, given their outlying positions, might be susceptible to being taken by a foreign power. Agustin Fernandez de San Vicente was then sent on a mission to help secure the capitol cities of Alta California and Lower California. However, the Iturbide revolutions had already taken place by the time Fernandez reached the respective capitols, so the allegiance of the Californias was already secured.
