79 pages complete. RARE Dutch translation of the French original, "La bete est morte!". Two parts in one volume: "Het Beest is Losgebroken" and "Het Beest is Verslagen". The story of World War Two set in an animal world. This is Calvo's most famous work. It earned him such esteem that he was invited to work for Walt Disney. He declined. It was published in France before the end of the war, but after the Occupation. This Dutch version was published in 1946 when wartime memories had yet to have the salve of time. A strong, vivid, colourful copy. The board cover is firm, sound with much wear and handling and storage marking. The edges and corners are much worn. The covers are very scuffed and marked by storage and shelving. The cloth spine is fit and healthy. Inside, the guttering along the frontispage is open but the security of the book is not affected. Taking the time of its publication and its eager readership into account the contents are in robust and vivid repair. The pages are clear, vibrant, expressive, memorable and bold. There is a cheeky 'version' of Marie France with a rabbit's head, breasts free, carrying a rifle with fixed bayonet! A delicious satire that still engrosses and thrills. fk. Book Condition: Fair.
