A few black-and-white illustrations, complete. Author's initials and inscription handwritten in black ink on a front flyleaf: "Frederic Carter, from his brother, C. F. C., Christmas, 1917." Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning. Covers are virtually pristine and intact except for minuscule wear to corners and head and tail of spine. Dust jacket is clean and intact overall but has slight fading along spine, some tape repair on inside of spine and panels, tiny chips at corners and top and bottom edges, and a few closed tears at the top and bottom edges (with the largest measuring about 1 1/4" from bottom edge on back panel). A collection of seven short stories of historical fiction in which the author sought to convey an accurate portrayal of daily life at the California missions in their early days. In his Foreword, Carter writes that all of the stories are based on historical events with the exception of "Juana" which he says is "wholly fanciful." The titles of the stories are "The Indian Sibyl's Prophecy," "The Flight of Padre Peyri," "Father Zalvidea's Money," "La Beata," "Juana," " Father Uria's Saints," and "Pomponio.". Book.
