Rawidowicz (1897-1957) was born in Poland and had a traditional education there. He moved to Berlin in 1919, to London, where he eventually taught at Leeds University, in 1933, and to the United States in 1947, where he taught at the College of Jewish Studies at Chicago and then at Brandeis University. He founded the Ayanot publishing house in Germany in the 1920s, and the Ararat Publishing Society in London during WWII.
