Floyd Clymer (1895-1970) was a Renaissance man of the racing world who was not only a motorcycle racer but also a motorcycle dealer, distributor, and manufacturer, a publisher, and an author. Clymer was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998 and into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America on March 17, 2020. Excerpt from the first page: "I purchased this new Mercury solely for the purpose of giving it a severe test, and then report my findings in this book. ... I believe that the motoring public would like more facts, more tests, and a more thorough description of mechanical features, rather than a bunch of fantastic claims and cleverly phrased catch words describing certain features that don't add to the car's performance. ... It is therefore my intention to include in this book not only complete and severe road tests of the new Mercury car, but also to compile a breakdown of the various units and equipment used in the post-war Mercury." Back cover shows an illustrated map of Clymer's 3426-mile test run of the 1949 Mercury from Los Angeles, California to Washington, D.C. In addition to technical information about the Mercury and its performance, Clymer gives his observations on what he saw during his journey. Clymer describes the city of Denver; Buffalo Bill's grave; "Mystery Spring" in Woodside, Utah; the injustices against the Paiute tribe in Santa Clara, Utah; and "Jack Benny's Towns.". Book.
