Letter handwritten in black ink on beige paper (West New Brighton, Staten Island, NY stationery). Datelined March 25, 1873 in New York. Letter measures 4 1/2" x 7." One page. Letter reads: "Mar. 25, 1873. Dear Sir, With great pleasure--and I am truly Yours, George William Curtis." "Mr. Lavely" also written at the lower-left corner, the possible addressee. George William Curtis (1824-1892) was an American writer and public speaker. He contributed many articles to Harper's Magazine and became the editor in the 1860s. Curtis wrote the humorous novels, Prue and I (1856) and Trumps (1862). Other writings include Washington Irving: A Sketch (1891) and Essays from the Easy Chair (1893) which is a collection of essays Curtis wrote under Harper's Magazine for "The Easy Chair" column. Curtis was also an abolitionist, education and civil service reformer, and an acquaintance of many literary and political greats such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Ulysses S.
