Mme Amable Voiart Tastu (1798-1885), the translator, was an esteemed poet and writer of travel books and educational juveniles. She was married young to an unsuccessful printer, and after his bankruptcy supported him and their son with her pen. The copyright of her popular translation was taken up by Didier, who published six editions between 1837 and 1855. Louis de Sainson, the artist, was expedition artist on French Government sponsored explorations through the Pacific and Oceania on the ship Astrolabe. Marbled boards backed in red leather, gilt. Extremities quite rubbed, with one-inch loss to head of spine in volume 1. Presentation inscription to "Winthrop H. Sargent from his Mother, Christmas 1849." Winthrop Sargent's bookplate.
