DITTRICH, Max. DER DEUTSCH-FRANZOSISCHE KRIEG 1870 UND 1871. Gedenk- Blatter in Wort und Bild an die Ehrentage der deutschen Nation. Dresden & New York: Druck & Verlag von H. G. Munchmeyer, [1890]. Profusely illustrated with color lithographs and wood-engraved text illustrations. 86pp., plus illus. 17 3/4 by 22 3/8 inches (45.5 x 55.2 cm.). Oblong folio, brown cloth, interlaced border stamped in black to boards, title and decoration stamped in gilt to upper board. This is a near contemporary account of the Franco-Prussian war, which resulted in the establishment of the Third Republic of France and the German Empire, produced in Germany. It is illustrated with 25 full-page lithographs depicting military actions; 24 of which are in brilliant color. The text pages have printed borders and numerous wood-engraved illustrations showing supplementary action and portraits of prominent people and leaders on both the French and German sides. The paper has toned at the edges and is brittle, showing several short tears and some chipping; the title page is torn in half, but both pieces are present. The volume is dampstained along the fore-edge, affecting the text and some of the plates. Two of the plates have closed tears which enter the image. The volume lacks the spine, although both boards are attached to the text block by the sewing cords; the cloth is moderately stained, and the gilt has dulled. This is an interesting historical item with impressive chromoliths; it is offered as is. Click here for full details of this book, to ask a question or to buy it on-line.
