Pierre Molinier, a truly great artist, made it the most desirable plastic object of the 20th century. Unbenownst to Matt McMullen, Real Doll's immensely successful inventor, the great critic/novelist Susan Sontag eerily anticipated and described in "The Dummy" (it appears in "I, Etcetera", her only collection of stories) the life of an engineering wizard and the Real Doll he has created for himself and with whom he falls in love, an allegorical tale about the doll as perhaps the ideal partner, companion, friend, and lover for every man, the perfect substitute for the exasperatingly complex Real-Life Woman. "Still Lovers" was taken over a period of many years, as Real Doll evolved and became fantastically real, a development period that the Real Doll male benefitted from. The Real Doll male (called "Charlie"), flaccid and erect on command, was created in 2001. The Real Doll phenomenon has finally gone mainstream via a major Hollywood film in 2007, "Lars And The Real Girl", with Ryan Gosling and "Bianca".
