Original advertisement for a book by Booth Tarkington, Penrod and Sam. Published by Doubleday, Page and Company. Printed as a brochure on white paper. No date, circa 1916. 5 1/4" x 8 1/4." Four pages, complete. One leaf folded in half and printed on all sides. Paper is very clean and intact overall except for a some wrinkling and a small puncture on the third and fourth pages not affecting text. Splitting along a horizontal fold line at center. The first three pages provide example illustrations of the book and some selling points of the story. The price of the book is listed as $1.35. The fourth page lists six other books by Tarkington and summaries, specifications, and prices of each book. Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) was an American author and playwright who was one of only four novelists to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. From the 1910s to the 1920s, Tarkington was considered one of the foremost authors in the United States. Tarkington also served one term in the Indiana House of Representatives. Penrod and Sam was originally published in 1916 as a sequel to Tarkington's first book in the trilogy, Penrod. The last book of the trilogy is Penrod Jashber. The Penrod trilogy bears some resemblance to Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in that the books are coming-of-age novels that follow the misadventures of the titular character, Penrod Schofield. Like the first book, Penrod and Sam is once again about Penrod's misadventures but with more of an emphasis on his relationship with his best friend, Sam Williams.. Ephemera.
