The Bookwoman's Last Fling follows the story of Cliff Janeway, a Denver-based book dealer and former policeman, who finds himself wrapped up in two seemingly disparate worlds of horse racing and book collecting. Janeway has been called to an Idaho estate to appraise the books in the collection of a deceased couple, Candice Geiger, a collector of children's books, and H. R. Geiger, a horse owner and trainer. Janeway begins his relatively routine task of book appraising when he notices that something is amiss with the collection; some valuable book titles are missing while others, of equal value, remain standing. This oddity leads to Janeway's investigation into the strange circumstances surrounding the death of Candice, who had passed away twenty years ago. John Dunning (1942-2023) was an American author. He is perhaps best-known for his crime fiction. Dunning draws upon his personal experiences for this novel as he was a Denver-based bookseller and had worked as a stable hand at a horse racing track in his twenties.. Book. Book Condition: As New. When wealthy horse trainer H. R. Geiger dies, Denver bookman Cliff Janeway encounters the legacy of the man's wife, Candice, a true bookwoman who left behind an assortment of rare first-edition children's books. Sent to assess the collection, Janeway soon finds that several titles are missing, replaced by cheap reprints -- while other hugely expensive pieces remain. Why would a thief take one priceless book and leave an equally valuable volume on the shelf? Suspecting foul play, Janeway follows the trail of Candice's shadowy past to California's Golden Gate and Santa Anita racetracks, where he signs on as a racehorse hot walker. Eavesdropping on the chatter among the hands, he doesn't like what he hears. And when he goes to the house where Candice died to look for answers, Janeway finds much more than he bargained for..
