As Iona Opie remarks in her Foreword, Mother Goose rhymes are the first furnishings of the mind . . . they are full of poetically and effortless absurdity. In this volume there are over two hundred of the best-known and loved - as well as every favourite nursery character, from Jack Sprat to Little Jack Horner. Each lavish double-page has its own setting against which individual, thematically linked rhymes are illustrated. There are also intriguing visual links from one scene to the next: while Mary, Mary and the pretty maid work in the garden, for instance, two legs waggle in the air on the wall above them - when the page is turned, the legs are seen to belong to a now-broken Humpty Dumpty. There are pages of lullabies, action rhymes, nonsense verse, riddles and tongue-twisters.It's a classic Mother Goose and the crowning jewel in the career of one of the world's greatest illustrators.

Painter, etcher, illustrator and writer of children's books. His illustrative work is distinctive: he often works in colour or halftone, creating luminous effects with veils of thinly diluted pigment over delicate pencil outlines; in his etched illustrations,he uses soft ground techniques to achieve subtle tonal graduations. His imagery, ostensibly decorative, humorous or with a sometimes child-like appearance, often has menacing or bizarre overtones.
