The first GI to land on British soil staggered down the gangplank in January 1942.The US troops had come to join in Britain's figt against Hitler.Soon the 'peaceful invasion' had spread all over the British Isles - there were more than a million and a half GIs 'over here' by May 1944.
The Yanks were everywhere, complaining about the warm beer in the pubs, the Brussels sprouts served at every meal and the British weather - rain, fog and MUD. They were charming British girls and teaching them to jitterbug, surrounding themselves with gangs of British children demanding 'Got any gum, chum?' and spending their money freely.'Over-paid,over-sexed and over here,'muttered some of the natives.
But the GIs had come to fight. The 8th Air Force flew perilous bombing raids deep into Germany and US troops fought a desperate battle on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.
'Over Here' tells the story of those wartime days, fifty years ago,in the words of the GIs who came over and the British people who made them welcome - most of the time.
