An anthology of historical fiction about Indigenous Peoples in North America. Authored by Hamlin Garland (1860-1940), an American author who wrote novels, short stories, essays, and poetry. He is perhaps best-known for his novels about Midwestern farmers. Illustrated by Frederic Remington (1861-1909), an American artist and author. Remington worked in painting, sculpture, and illustration and often depicted subjects of the Old West such as Indigenous Peoples, cowboys, and military officers. He often used his first-hand accounts as sources for his art. For example, Remington had traveled to parts of the United States yet untouched by Western development and witnessed some of the last battles between U.S. cavalrymen and Indigenous Peoples. Remington's impressionistic, dramatic art style and choice of subjects helped to secure his role as one of the most commercially successful artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries..
