Local guide to the site of the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. At the southeastern tip of Attica is a rocky cape named Sounias Akra, which means Tip of Sounino or simply Sounion and is mentioned in Homer's Odyssey as a sacred place actually connected since that period with the Athenians. The remains still exist of an ancient fortress with a small port and arsenal and two shrines dedicated to Poseidon and Athena. Excavations were carried out by Dorpfeld in 1884 and by the Greeks V.
