H. Liebes & Company : Dear Old San Francisco

Original flyer with poem and advertisement printed in black and orange ink on beige paper. The flyer features a poem, "Dear Old San Francisco," by an anonymous writer but also promotes the business of H. Liebes & Company, a noted fur exporter and manufacturer in San Francisco. No date, circa 1880s-1920s. 4 1/2" x 8 1/2." One page, complete. Flyer is virtually pristine and intact except for two horizontal fold lines and a tiny closed tear limited to top margin. A Fine copy. A poem and love letter to San Francisco. The author longs for San Francisco and describes its appeal such as the weather, natural scenery, and locals. The following promotional text is printed below the poem in the bottom margin: "Compliments of H. Liebes & Company, Exporters and Manufacturers of Fine Furs; Two Grand Prizes Award at P. P. I. E.; Special Mail Order Department. Send For Illustrated Catalogue; All Articles Delivered Free to Any Part of the United States; 167-177 Post Street. 136-144 Grant Avenue, San Francisco; Established 1864." The following is an excerpt from the poem: "I want to go to San Francisco / And I want to go to stay, / For life there's worth the livin' / And the work is just like play. / There's the golden poppy bloomin' / And the grapes are on the vine, / And the breeze from off the ocean, / Is as good as any wine." H. Liebes & Company was founded by Herman Liebes in 1864. Herman's business prospered over the years and became a prominent company in the fur trade. Herman's son, Isaac Liebes, later formed the North American Commercial Company about 1890. Online documentation suggests H. Liebes & Company was active until at least the 1920s.. Ephemera.
