Signature on beige card by Joel Tyler Headley in black ink. Card adhered to beige paper with Royal Irish Linen, Marcus Ward & Co. watermark. Datelined March 18, 1880 in Newburgh, New York. Card measures 5" x 3"; paper measures 7 7/8" x 10 3/8." Card reads: "Newburgh, March 18th, 1880, Yours very sincerely, J. T. Headley." Signature is clean and intact. The card and paper have minimal wear with very light staining on the card. Joel Tyler Headley (1813-1897) was an American politician, historian, writer, newspaper editor, and clergyman. Headley began his career as a clergyman but later chose to be a historian and wrote on many subjects. Headley became associate editor of the New York Tribune under the newspaper's founder, Horace Greeley (1811-1872). In 1855, Headley became a member of the New York State Assembly and was the New York Secretary of State from 1856-1857.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine.
