First edition, the variant binding of two volumes bound into a single volume with the advertisement leaves from the first volume omitted, this being the Edel & Laurence printing state b. (see below). 8vo. 255pp and 272pp. Original publisher's blue sand-grain cloth lettered in gold at the spine with embossed patterning between two double gilt-stamped rules. A little wear to the backstrip ends and corner tips, and a small nick to the cloth at the head of the backstrip. The hinges slightly tender, and one gathering from volume one (pp.193-208) detached and laid-in. Tiny dealer plate to the base of the front pastedown, and a pencilled former owner name to the head of the half-title. The margins of three or four preliminary leaves lightly spotted, and with a touch of very occasional soiling thereafter. A nice bright copy of the author's uncommon fourth novel. The text was originally serialised in 'The Atlantic Monthly' between JulyOctober 1878, this English edition appeared just before the final periodical instalment, with the US edition following a month later. Edel & Laurence note: "the first printing consisted of 250 copies. There were two additional impressions of 250 copies each, in October and November 1878, lacking any imprint to distinguish them from the first issue". This would certainly appear to be one of either the first or second printings, with the printing error to the page heads ('iv' appearing instead of 'v' on pp.177-191 i.e. printing state b.). Furthermore, this is the variant single-volume binding (Edel & Laurence note: "Variant binding state also noted consists of sheets of the two volumes of the first edition bound into one volume, the binding being uniform with that of the second (one-volume) edition").
