The symbol of Paris and the idol of the world, "Miss" of the fabulous legs, the gamin-personality,the daring costumes, has been the most dazzling star of the entertainment. Her audience, from kings in the Royal Box (and in her dressing room), to urchins in the gallery, have adored and admired her.In this frank autobiography, she tells the story of her life,of her humble beginnings as a flower-seller,and of her years of hard work and struggle which brought her to the pinnacle of success. She talks intimately of the famous people she knew, and reveals herself again as a great artiste, and a fascinating woman. But these memoirs are more than the life of one woman, however famous. They are a colourful tapestry of Edwardian, late Victorian and present-day (then 1950s) Paris and London society.A unique collection of photographs brings back all the glamour and evokes all the nostalgia of these years. Mistinguett symbolised a particular period of the Parisian story. From the Folies and Moulin to some of the greatest stages of the early twentieth century. For many a woman,to be remembered for her legs would be a dispiriting experience, not so for Mistinguette whose legs were insured for 500,000 francs. She was proud of that. When she died Cocteau noted drily that it was appropriate that she should 'crumble away' as had the days in which she had shone brightly.
