(JE) This is an extremely readable, even-handed, comprehensive, and even dryly humorous treatment of the three great religions, covering Bible and Torah, the prophets, Jewish mysticism, Hillel, Philo, and Josephus, and many, many other great thinkers-Jewish and non-Jewish-compared and contrasted. As an author, Henry Iliowizi explored similar themes through both religious and literary texts. Describing this book, Ilowizi writes, "A plain statement of ‘Jewish Dreams and Realities contrasted with Islamitic and Christian Claims, ’ while it is likely to strike here and there a discordant note in the heart of intolerant zealotism, may at the same time contribute to strengthen that growing cordiality which of late brightens the intercourse between progressive Judaism and enlightened Christianity. " (Preface) Later, explaining his other writings he wrote, “The purpose of my writing ‘In the Pale’ was to familiarize the English-speaking public with the legendary, romantic and spiritual aspects of life in Russian Jewry; also to convey an idea of the folklore current among the oppressed millions of Jews in the Czar’s domains.
