JUNIUS, Franciscus. ETYMOLOGICUM ANGLICANUM ex Autographo descripsit & accessionibus permultis auctum edidit EDWARDUS LYE. Oxford, Sheldonian Theatre, 1743. Folio. Unpaginated. First edition. Engraved headpiece, and frontispiece author portrait from Van Dyke, engraved by George Vertue. Franciscus Junius (1591-1677) brought up at Leiden, was a pioneer of the study of language. He lived in England from 1620 to 1642 as tutor and librarian to the family of the Earl of Arundel. After his return to Holland he wrote a history of Classical art, which he translated from the Latin into English and Dutch, and books on early Germanic and Dutch languages. He returned to England two years before his death, and left a collection of manuscripts, including his own works, to Oxford. Edward Lye, a young clergyman, edited the ms. for the etymological dictionary in the Bodleian Library, and had it published. It was extremely important as the first systematic etymological dictionary in English, and was Samuel Johnson's primary source in writing his Dictionary. Occasional light marginal spotting, but on the whole internally clean, in old calf, quite worn. Both boards and first four leaves detached.
