The illustrations include drawings of Percy s wheeled ambulance and camel ambulance with special saddles to carry wounded. Larrey (1768-1842) studied under Desault at L Hotel Dieu. He became the greatest military surgeon in history. He was present at all of Napoleon s great battles and was one of the few who stood by him on his abdication and waited for him to return in 1815. Napoleon said he was the most virtuous man he knew. He was one of the first to amputate at the hip joint, the first to describe the therapeutic effect of maggots on wounds, gave the first description of trench foot, invented the flying ambulance , used advanced first-aid posts on the battlefield, and devised several new operations.
