A Near Fine book in a Very Good dust jacket. Ethelreda Lewis (1875-1946) was a South African author of English descent. Lewis was born in Derbyshire and later moved to South Africa in 1904 where she stayed until her passing in 1946. Lewis was socially progressive for her time and advocated for the rights of black South Africans. She wrote much about the exploitation of black South Africans in her career even though it was an unpopular subject at the time. The Harp is Lewis's first book and is about a white South African named Andrew Falconer and his relationships with three people, his mother, his son, and the wife of a friend. Text on the back panel of the dust jacket explains that the namesake of this book comes from the metaphorical comparison between kinsmen and the strings of a harp; they are both interconnected although seemingly separate. The Harp references the discrimination that black South Africans faced in their own country. Excerpt from back panel: "[Andrew Falconer] had three kinsmen: his own son, his mother, and the wife of his friend. His wife had another son, a boy too dark to be of the Harp; and therein lay the drama and the discord.". Book. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: Hardcover.
