He began working in a factory at a tender age; in order to escape the grueling labor, he borrowed money and bought a long boat, becoming a notorious oyster thief. Working under dangerous conditions and running afoul of the law quickly led London to his Socialist opinions. While supporting his widowed mother and attending Berkeley, he began writing short stories, at first to no end. Around the turn of the century, London's luck turned, and he became on of the highest paid writers of his time. He wrote more than fifty full-length works, and countless short stories and articles, some of which have been translated into dozens of languages. He died at the age of forty.
