Chatham, Columbia County, New York, was a lawyer, politician, soldier, judge, and Chief Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. With the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Lyon formed a company of volunteers, was elected captain, and served with the 8th Wisconsin Infantry until 1862 when he became colonel of the 13th Wisconsin Volunteers.
