George Lyttelton (also, Lyttleton; 1709-1773), 1st Baron Lyttelton, also known as Sir George Lyttelton, 5th Baronet from 1751-1756, was an English politician, author, poet, and patron of the arts. This Third Edition of Lyttelton's Dialogues of the Dead (1760) was published soon after the two preceding editions. It corrects eleven items that were listed as Errata in the Second Edition. The Third Edition contains twenty-eight "dialogues" written by Lyttelton and three by one of his friends, Elizabeth Montagu (1718-1800), an English author, literary critic, social reformer, and patron of the arts. These imaginative conversations feature deceased historical figures as well as mythological and archetypal figures who discuss matters of politics, philosophy, and literature. The titles of each dialogue show the speakers involved. The Dialogues are titled as follows: "Lord Falkland--Mr. Hampden," "Louis le Grand--Peter the Great," "Plato--Fenelon," "Mr. Addison--Circe," "Mercury--An English Duelist--A North-American Savage," "Pliny the Elder--Pliny the Younger," "Fernando Cortez--William Penn," "Marcus Portius Cato--Messalla Corvinus," "Christina, Queen of Sweden--Chancellor Oxenstiern," "Titus Vespasianus--Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus," "Henry Duke of Guise--Machiavel," "Virgil--Horace--Mercury--Scaliger the Elder," "Boileau--Pope," "Octavia--Portia--Arria," "Louise de Coligni, Princess of Orange--Frances Walsingham, Countess of Essex and of Clanrickard; before, Lady Sidney," "Marcus Brutus--Pomponius Atticus," "William the Third, King of England--John de Witt, Pensioner of Holland," "M. Apicius--Darteneuf," "Alexander the Great--Charles the Twelfth, King of Sweden," "Cardinal Ximenes--Cardinal Wolsey," "Lucian--Rabelais," "Pericles--Cosmo de Medicis, the First of that Name," "Locke--Bayle," "Archibald, Earl of Douglas, Duke of Touraine--John, Duke of Argyle and Greenwich, Field Marshal of His Britannic Majesty's Forces," "Cadmus--Hercules," "Mercury--And a modern fine Lady," and "Plutarch--Charon--And a modern Bookseller.".
