A Very Good copy. Printed herein is an expose report submitted by members of the House of Representatives and Senate of Massachusetts. The report was published for the express purpose of informing the general public about a "factious conspiracy" that violated the "public trust" and was "criminal, not only in morals but in the law of the land." The authors of the report are referring to a conspiracy committed by a group of state politicians calling themselves the "Coalition." The Coalition included members of the Free Soil and Democratic Parties that partook in a conspiracy to rig the voting system of the Massachusetts and United States government. The report concisely summarizes what the conspiracy was and then ardently denounce the conspirators for their blatant violation of the law and morality. The Coalition had conspired to elect Democrat candidate George S. Boutwell as Massachusetts governor in exchange for the Free Soil candidate, Charles Sumner, being elected to the U.S. Senate. Democrats and Free Soilers made a backdoors deal and contract to elect each other's respective candidates to office and to overturn any voting that would be contrary to their conspiracy. The authors continue to lambaste the actions of the Coalition Free Soilers and Democrats and briefly turn to principles of common law and past legal cases in which similar actions were found to be criminal to justify their opposition against the conspiracy. The last two pages include the printed names of over 100 politicians from the Massachusetts House and Senate who jointly backed this report and the denouncement of the conspirators.. Book.
