The story opens as Travis takes his place among the lawmen of the mid-1800s. At that time the Texas Rangers were made up of rugged individuals charged by Stephen F. Austin to "range across Texas for the common defense. Travis soon discovers that he has a great deal to learn in order to perfect the skills that will enable him to survive on the violent Texas frontier. One of his first jobs is to chase a cold-blooded murderer across the vast plains of Texas to bring the outlaw to justice.
