(Johannesburg: Afrikaanse Pers-Boekhandel, 1963)

8vo; original yellow boards; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (vi) + 318. Dustwrapper rubbed; earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; regular, light browning throughout; occasional spotting. Good to very good condition. "In many respects this book has had a remarkable history. The manuscript had been lying in the vault of A.P.B. for almost thirty years, when it was recently discovered by our present publisher. This fact is all the more remarkable because the work is highly topical and, to our knowledge, the only English work by Gustav Preller, the pioneer Afrikaans historian and journalist. ... As the author mentions in his preface, this book is the simple story of a very remarkable Matabele King, a man of leadership and ability, who established his own kingdom in the present Rhodesias. It had, alas, also to be the story of his downfall, and of the manner of his downfall. The work aims in the first place at defending the case of Lobengula against European encroachments. Striking revelations are made in regard to the tussle between Kruger and Rhodes and the latter is sometimes dethroned in a somewhat harsh manner. But Kruger also does not escape the verdict of History."
