A home-made bomb exploding on a household moored in the Seine, following two brutal stabbings in Pigalle, marks the beginning of this exciting and intriguing story set in Paris at the turn of the century. Following these perplexing events the Sûreté is sent anonymously a list of targets for assassination which includes the President of the Republic and other famous figures. The Director General decides that it is the work of anarchists and that they must expect a wave of terror similar to one which had swept Paris not many years previously. But Inspector Gautier is not so certain. The list is a 'hit list' with a difference, for against each name is a drawing of a playing card. Believing that the choice of the cards, their suit and value, must be in some way significant, he begins trying to decipher the secret. The characters he meets during his investigations are also intriguing; a bearded fortune teller, a wealthy armament salesman, a disgraced Government minister, an eccentric novelist and the beautiful widow of a Russian prince, reputed to have escaped as a girl from a Turkish harem. The story unfolds against the varied background of life in the Paris of La Belle Epoque, at Longchamps races, the Opera, a fashionable salon and a ginguette on the banks of the Seine, to reach its climax at a spectacular ball masque. Death on the Cards is Richard Grayson's seventh Inspector Gautier novel and a delightful and worthy successor to Crime without Passion and, most recently, Death en voyage.. Book Condition: Very Good.
