Visually, the external appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation [for a book of it’s 10+ year-old age.It is only the faults described that prevent a slightly higher grading overall.Despite that,it really is still an exceptional example for it’s brightnesss, cleanliness and lack of other,or age-acquired detracting faults.
A curio,as only a few originals exist; telling the story of Samuel Derrick [the compiler], Jack Harris [the self-proclaimed 'Pimp-General of All England'], and Charlotte Hayes [Derrick's friend and one-time mistress],whose complicated and colorful lives were brought together by the publication of the infamous Harris' List, updated each year between 1757 and 1795; a guidebook of prostitutes which detailed addresses, physical characteristics and "specialties.During the time that it ran,it sold more than a quarter of a million copies. 'Harris’s List' was not written by anyone named Harris, but by an Irish poet named Samuel Derrick who had fallen on hard times and needed to find a way to keep himself out of debtor’s prison.Jack Harris was a notorious London pimp who allowed Derrick the use of his influential name and his extensive list of contacts in return for a one time fee,and in doing so, he only became bitter while Derrick became increasingly wealthy.
