Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional ,and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age and nature, i.e. an ephemeral wraps/paperback Original. It is only the minimal and minor exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading. Despite them,it really is still an exceptional copy for its cleanliness, brightness and completenes and particularly because of its scarcity.
The traditional hookers of Galway are renowned among sailboat enthusiasts for their beauty and resilience.Dating back into the mists of time, these unique craft have plied for centuries in the rough Atlantic seas of Galway bay, serving the maritime needs of the rugged coasts of Connemara.A remarkably successful restoration movement over the past decade has saved the Galway hookers from virtual extinction.
In this profusely illustrated record,a leading expert surveys the story of the hooker, and the environment that gred the working sailboats of the West of Ireland. Many informative photographs and detailed drawings explain the construction, operation and social background of these fascinating vessels.
Some corrections and updating have been made and a new layout adopted for the illustrations, together with additional photographs in monochrome and colour.A fresh drafting of the plans of the hooker Saint Patrick is included by courtesy of Paddy Barry, the owner, and the French nautical magazine 'Le Chasse Maree'.
Richard J. Scott,a regular visitor to Connemara for over twenty years, has had a lifelong interest in ships and the sea,out of Dun Laoghaire and the Shannon estuary. He has sailed on some of Ireland's last trading schooners out of Arklow, Cork and Appledore in Devon, and on cruising yachts; while in 1981 he received the first award of the Galway Hooker Association for services to traditional craft.
